Wright Fifth In 800m At Oly. Trials

EUGENE, Ore. -- Twenty-six one-hundredths of a second. That was the difference between Phoebe Wright's fifth-place time and third place, the final qualifying position for the Olympic Games in the 800 meters.
The former Lady Vol NCAA champion carded a readout of one minute, 59.72 seconds Monday night at Hayward Field to finish fifth in her first U.S. Olympic Trials. She came up tantalizingly short in her bid for a trip to London for the 2012 Games.
Alysia Montano (1:59.08), Geena Gall (1:59.24) and Alice Schmidt (1:59.46) earned the three berths to the Olympiad, while Molly Beckwith (1:59.68) crossed just ahead of Wright, who ran in third for a large portion of the race.
In the qualifying round of the 5000 meters, former Lady Vol Jackie Areson was unable to advance. Her 16:11.19 readout left her 12th in heat one and 23rd overall.
Athletes will get a two-day break from competition on Tuesday and Wednesday before action resumes on Thursday. Lady Vol senior Ellen Wortham is among those still waiting to compete. She will run in the qualifying round of the 400-meter hurdles at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.
