BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two future Lady Vols produced top-five finishes Sunday on the final day of the USA Junior Track & Field Championships at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Cassie Wertman, a signee from Holland, Ind., and Southridge High School, turned in the finest outcome of the weekend by a woman affiliated with the Tennessee program. She missed earning a berth to the IAAF World Junior Championships by a half inch, carding a mark of 50 feet, 4 1/2 inches to place third in the women's shot put. Torie Owers finished just ahead, uncorking a toss of 50-4 3/4 to nab the second of the U.S. bids to the world meet.
Felicia Brown, meanwhile, rolled to a career-best time of 53.11 seconds to notch a fifth-place finish in the women's 400m final. The future Lady Vol's clocking was an improvement over her previous personal record of 53.46, which she ran in the first round on Saturday.
