BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After winning the discus throw for the third-straight meet, Tennessee rookie Tavis (TAY-viss) Bailey was named the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Bailey, a redshirt freshman from Kannapolis, N.C., won the discus at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday with a toss of 176 feet, four inches. He picked up a win in the discus for the third consecutive weekend and has finished either first or second in that event in all five competitions during his first season as a collegiate thrower.
A transfer from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C., where he was a member of the football team in the fall of 2010, Bailey currently ranks fourth in the SEC this season with a career-best fling of 176-9, which he achieved at the Sea Ray Relays.
He will travel to LaJolla, Calif., this weekend, where he'll join the rest of the Tennessee throws corps in competing at the U.S. Olympic Training Center on Thursday and the UCSD Triton Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
