KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The final number of Tennessee Lady Vol swimmers & divers traveling to Auburn, Ala., for the 2012 NCAA Championships is 11, as Tori Lamp and Jodie McGroarty will join nine swimmers at the national meet as a result of their efforts at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships hosted by Auburn University.
Lamp, who solidified her spot Monday after claiming fourth on the 1-meter boards, earned the number one priority spot Wednesday by winning the platform competition. The Knoxville native finished first with a combined score of 619.10, aided by entering the finals with the top prelim tally of 301.65.
With the win on the platform, Lamp qualified McGroarty for NCAAs next week. Once a diver earns a priority spot, the rest of her performances are skipped. The priority process continues until 10 differentdivers appear on the list.
A redshirt junior, McGroarty finished 20th in the event with a score of 204.65. McGroarty entered the final day of zones ranked as the top competitor who did not hold priority spot, needing just one of the top seven divers who already punched their ticket to the national championships to finish third or better.
Her sixth-place performance on the 3-meter boards a day ago seeded her 15th on the priority list, as she made the cut by ranking ninth among the field.
Senior Gabrielle Trudeau was on the outside looking in, but gave it everything she had Wednesday. Needing to finish in the top three to guarantee a spot for NCAAs, the Montreal, Canada, product came up a bit short, claiming sixth on the towers after a two-round total of 528.20.
"We finished the zone championships on a successful note, but also with a lot of mixed emotions," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "We finished on a high with Tori winning the platform against a veteran field of divers. The rough part of the day was Gaby finishing sixth."
Trudeau concluded the event ranked 15th on the priority list.
"She had a good opportunity to get into the top four, which would have qualified her for NCAAs, but she came up short," Parrington said. "I'm really disappointed for her. She gave a valiant effort and I'm really of her and grateful for the opportunity I had to work with her."
The 2012 NCAA Championships will also be held in Auburn, Ala., and take place March 15-17 at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
