Postgame Notes: Virginia 46, Vols 38

THE SERIES WITH VIRGINIA

This was UT's first trip to Charlottesville since the Cavs hosted the Vols for a second-round NIT game on March 23, 1992. Virginia won that contest by a score of 77-52.

The Vols trail the all-time series with the Cavaliers, 8-4, with UVa winning three of the last four games.

Tennessee is  now 92-78 (.542) against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

FOR STARTERS

The starters for the seventh game in a row: sophomore forward Jarnell Stokes, senior forward Kenny Hall, sophomore guard Josh Richardson, junior Trae Golden and senior guard Skylar McBee.

Sitting out of the game were senior Jeronne Maymon (knee), senior Dwight Miller (knee), freshman Derek Reese(labral tear).

Junior Trae Goldennetted the Vols' first basket of the game, on a layup, 1:49 into the action.

The Vols had three subs with D'Montre Edwards, Quinton Chievous and Jordan McRae subbing in with 4:34 into the action.

LOW SCORING NOTES

It was the second game in a row that the Vols failed to score 40 points. The 38 points mark the third-lowest total by Tennessee since the shot clock started being used in 1985. The fewest points since 85-86 was a 35-point output at Auburn on Jan. 15, 1997. The second-fewest points came in Friday's game at Georgetown with 36.

Virginia's 46 points were the second-fewest the Vols have allowed in the Cuonzo Martin Era. The 37 points by Georgetown were the fewest by an opponent under Martin. UT has allowed just 41.5 points per game in the last two games.

#LOCKDOWN DEFENSE

The Tennessee defense was stout again as the Vols held Virginia to 35 percent for the game including 32 percent in the second half.

It marked the fourth game in a row that UT held its foe to less than 37 percent from the floor.

Virginia shot just 12.5 percent from 3-point range (1-of-8). It is the second game in a row that a Vols' opponent only made one trey as Georgetown was 1-of-7.

Over the last three games, the Vols are allowing just 4-of-31 from 3-point land for 12.9 percent.

GOLDEN IN DOUBLE-FIGURES

After not having one player score in double-figures for the entire game at Georgetown, Trae Golden had 11 points to lead UT. It was his fifth game this season with 10-plus points and 32nd of his career -- all in the last two seasons.

LOPEZ GETS TIME

Knoxville native Brandon Lopez played a career-high five minutes with key minutes in the first half as the first point guard off the bench. He missed his only shot of the game.

HALL CARERE HIGHS

Senior Kenny Hall played a career-high tying 32 minutes. He previously played 32 against UNC Asheville, earlier this season.

Hall attempted a career-high 11 shots, passing his previous high of 10 vs. Alabama in 2010.

TAKE THE CHARGE

Tennessee has now drawn 11 charges through the first seven games of the season. Senior Kenny Hall drew his team-high fourth charge of the season and 11th in his career.

UP NEXT

The Vols return to Thompson-Boling Arena next week to open a six-game homestand. UT will be back in action on Dec. 13 against Wichita State with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
