CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Tennessee Vol diver Jordan Mauney advanced to the platform finals, but came up just short in earning a national qualifying spot on Sunday afternoon at the USA Zone A National Preliminary Meet.
The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native claimed seventh in the platform event with a score of 276.30. Normally the top five divers in the event advance, but due to a pre-qualifier who competed, the sixth-place finisher also punched a ticket to nationals.
"Jordan really had a roller coaster kind of day," UT Head Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "He struggled on a few dives but only missed qualifying by six points, so that was disappointing."
Vols who qualified for the national meet are Michael Wright and Brent Sterling. Wright will be in action on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, while Sterling will compete in the 1-meter competition.
The 2011 AT&T National Diving Championships will be held in Los Angeles, Calif., over Aug. 9-14 on the campus of UCLA.
