CHRISTIANSBURGH, Va. - A pair of Tennessee divers in rising juniors Brent Sterling and Jordan Mauney each competed on the 1-meter boards on Saturday afternoon at the 2011 Zone A USA Diving National Preliminary Meet.
Sterling qualified for the 1-meter finals and notched seventh in the event with a score of 306.30. However, due to a pre-qualifier in the event and an individual competing as an exhibition diver, Sterling picked up the fifth and final qualifying spot for the AT&T National Diving Championships.
Mauney just missed advancing to the finals by one spot, claiming 14th in the prelims with a tally of 276.55. His tally was a mere 1.70 points behind 13th place.
"I'm very proud of Brent and it's good news for him that he is going to nationals," UT head diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Jordan was a little disappointed in not making the finals but he did a very nice job as well."
Mauney will have one more chance to qualify for the national meet when he takes to the towers on Sunday.
