Porteous Starts Fast at British Amateur

Tennessee's best performer at the recent NCAA Men's Golf Championship has taken his game to home soil with similar results.
Garrick Porteous, who hails from Morpeth in England's northeastern corner, tied for fourth in the stroke-play portion of the 116th British Amateur and easily qualified as one of 64 match-play participants. The competition at Hesketh and Hillside golf clubs in Southport, England, runs through Saturday.
Porteous shot 70 Monday at Hesketh and then came back with a 72 the next day at Hillside to total 1-under-par 142. He completed his junior year at Tennessee as the Vols' hottest golfer, tying for fourth at the NCAA regional and then 38th at the NCAA championship earlier this month in Stillwater, Okla.
Porteous carded three birdies in Monday's round against just two bogeys -- none after the eighth hole -- for his 1-under round of 70. Tuesday's play resulted in an even-par 72, but the journey was interesting. Porteous rallied from an uneven front nine of two birdies, three pars and three bogeys to post birdies on Nos. 11 and 12, helping offset one additional bogey.
UT teammate Danny Keddie also participated but shot a pair of 77s and failed to advance.
A total of 288 world-ranked amateur golfers from 35 countries entered the competition. In addition to the Amateur Championship Trophy, this week's winner earns a place in the 2011 British Open Championship at Royal St George's and an invitation to the 2012 Masters at Augusta National.
Scoring and updates are available daily at the R&A's Amateur Championship site.
Paisley Playing Waiting Game
Former Tennessee golfer Chris Paisley is by his own admission taking a slow route to the top of golf. But if he keeps up his recent run of fine form, he may just get there more quickly than he imagined.
The 25-year-old Englishman finished in a tie for third place the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda last week, and he is no stranger to winning this season, having already posted two victories on the Alps Tour to lead the Order of Merit.
