Areson, Alexander Earn SEC Acclaim

Areson Earns SEC Community Service ScholarshipKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- While the overall award went to Georgia track & field standout Bridget Lyons, Tennessee's Jackie Areson was among 11 women earning $3000 post-graduate scholarships as their schools' nominees for the Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award.
Areson, a distance runner who completed her UT career as both an NCAA and SEC champion during the indoor track & field season, joined Vol diver Michael Wright as Tennessee's nominees of the award and recipients of the scholarship monies.
The 10 other female recipients are Jessica Allaway, Rowing, Alabama; Britni Williams, Soccer, Arkansas; Addison Ragsdale, Soccer, Auburn; Megan Bush, Softball, Florida; Samantha DeMartine, Softball, Kentucky; Courtney Alexander, Soccer, LSU; Juliana Smith, Track and Field, Ole Miss; Courtney Nesbit, Softball, Mississippi State; Jewel May, Basketball, South Carolina; Rebecca Silinski, Basketball, Vanderbilt. As mentioned, Lyons was the overall winner and recipient of a $6000 scholarship.
The 10 other male recipients are Daniel Armstrong, Swimming and Diving, Alabama; Chris Nott, Tennis, Arkansas; Justin Hargett, Baseball, Auburn; Robert Walsh, Swimming and Diving, Florida; Asaph Levy, Track and Field, Georgia; Marcus Davis, Football, Kentucky; Kyle Rose, Track and Field, LSU; Mark Melichar, Football, Mississippi State; Michael Zajac, Track and Field, South Carolina; Bram Chisholm, Track and Field, Vanderbilt. Track & field standout Barnabas Kirui of Ole Miss was the men's overall winner.
The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship was named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis. Davis succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006. He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner
Alexander Draws SEC Acclaim For Weekend's WorkKNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track & field throws standout Annie Alexander has been named the Southeastern Conference Women's Field Event Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Alexander, a junior from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, swept the shot put and discus throw titles for the second straight weekend, winning those events as the Lady Vols triumphed over UCLA, 82-81, in a dual meet in Los Angeles on Saturday.
She won the shot with a school-record toss of 57 feet, 9 3/4 inches, snapping her previous UT best of 57-3, which she recorded in 2008. She then came back later in the afternoon to win the discus with a fling of 179-8, helping UT move back into the lead vs. the Bruins.
Alexander ranks No. 1 in the SEC in each event and stands No. 2 nationally in the shot and No. 4 in the discus. She remains undefeated in four throws competitions in 2011, coming off redshirting indoors this season and outdoors a year ago. She improved her totals to 16 career victories in the discus and seven outdoors in the shot.
