KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Lady Vol distance runner Jackie Areson has been added to the women's watch list for The Bowerman, the award's watch list committee and the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday.
The Bowerman is awarded each year to the top male collegiate athlete and to the top female collegiate athlete in the sport of NCAA track & field. The award is named after Bill Bowerman, who served as the University of Oregon's head track & field coach from 1949-72 and remained active at the University and in the coaching world even as the shoe company he co-founded, Nike®, grew.
The Tennessee standout currently owns the fastest time in the NCAA this season at 5000 meters (15:39.81) and is among the nation's top three performers in the 3K (9:01.91) in 2011. The school-record efforts enabled Areson to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be held March 11-12 in College Station, Texas.
At the SEC Indoor Championships over the weekend, Areson broke a 24-year-old meet record to win the 3000 meters in 9:10.49. She also anchored the Big Orange to another conference crown and meet record as well as an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the distance medley relay at 11:05.37.
