Junior Tennessee diver Ryan Helms qualified on Friday for the NCAAs at the Zone B Diving Championships in Athens, Ga.
Helms scored 763.70 points in two rounds to take third place on the men's 3-meter. The Moultrie, Ga., native is the second Vol to punch a ticket to the NCAA championships, hosted by Minnesota later this month. Senior Michael Wright qualified Thursday with a second-place finish on the 1-meter.
"Ryan stepped up and competed today," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He really showed up and dove well. He was in contention to win today, so that was really good to see."
Wright finished seventh with a score of 728.10 points. Knoxville-native Brent Sterling just missed the cut to dive in the finals, placing 20th with 318.60 points. Sophomore Jordan Mauney finished 25th with 305.20 points.
"Mike and Ryan are qualified, so they will be competing tomorrow with a little confidence," Parrington said. "Jordan and Brent still have one more chance and I think they are capable of qualifying."
The last chance for Sterling and Mauney to qualify will come in the platform event at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Live results are available at www.DiveMeets.com.
