KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The ninth-ranked Tennessee women's swimming and diving team will take to the waters one more time at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center as it welcomes four teams to compete in the Tennessee "Last Chance" Meet on Friday and Saturday.
Featuring only swimming events, the meet gives competitors one final opportunity to earn season-best performances in an effort to move up the national lists before the NCAA Championships participants are announced.
The University of Texas will host the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships over March 18-20 in Austin, Texas.
Preliminary rounds will begin at 10 a.m. each day of the meet, while the finals will begin at 6 p.m.
"We want to use this meet to qualify more people to NCAAs and we think there are two or three who have that opportunity," Lady Vol assistant coach Jennifer Woodruff said. "We also want to use it to refine our races, so there will be a couple of those who have qualified for NCAAs who are going to swim in the meet. For others it is also a good last meet of the season to work on one or two things they learned from SECs."
UT had no shortage of significant performances that cemented spots for Lady Vol performers at national meet last week at the SEC Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
Junior Jenny Connolly earned three gold medals, all with NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 100y fly, 100y back and 400y medley relay. Connolly touched in at 51.64 seconds in the fly event and had a clocking of 51.39 seconds in the 100y back.
Joining Connolly on the relay were senior Martina Moravcikova, sophomore Kelsey Floyd and freshman Lindsay Gendron. In the 200y medley relay, freshman Mary Kate McNeilis along with Connolly, Moravcikova and Floyd placed third with an A-cut time of 1:37.09.
Floyd set a new UT record in the 200y fly, grabbing second with an A-cut time of 1:54.17, while Moravcikova also earned an A-cut in the 100y breast after touching in at 59.78 seconds during the prelims of the event.
The Orange and White finished fourth for the third-straight season at the SEC Championships, notching 466.50 points. Overall, UT garnered three gold medals, two silvers and five bronze medals, making the podium in 10 of the 18 swimming events.
