Golf Holds Steady at UNC Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Lady Vol golf team used strong performances from juniors Erica Popson and Sara Monberg to hold steady on the leader board on day two of the UNC Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
With a two-day total of 583, the Big Orange holds steady in ninth place in the 18-team field.
The Orange and White opened the day strong with an even team score at the turn and carded an additional three birdies over the next four holes, but the Lady Vols were unable to keep the momentum and found themselves eight-over through the final five holes on the day.
"We had a good round going and lost a few shots on the last three holes," head coach Judi Pavón said. "With strong fields like this we cannot afford to stumble on the way in."
Popson leads UT through the first two rounds of play at the Invite. Carding a two-under 70 in the second round, she is three-under for the tournament and is tied for eighth place heading into the tournament's final round. Monberg's one-under 71 on day two brings her even for the tournament and ties her for 14th in the field.
Freshman AJ Newell (74) and sophomore Chessey Thomas (75) also carded solid efforts Saturday. The pair finds themselves tied for 39th and 66th places respectively.
Senior Nathalie Mansson recorded a six-over 78 on day two of her first tournament back from injury.
"Both Erica and Sara had good rounds today and AJ and Chessey turned in respectable scores. Nathalie is just not quite back in playing shape yet, but each day will get her closer."
Alabama and Louisiana State lead through 36 holes at seven under par. North Carolina sits in third place, even through 36 holes.
