LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Tennessee track & field teams opened the 2011 campaign Friday night at the Kentucky Invitational, with Desmond Brown and Laquoya Kelly posting the top Vol and Lady Vol finishes, respectively, at UK's Nutter Field House.
Brown competed in the triple jump for the first time as a Vol and managed a mark of 45-0 1/4. That leap was enough to earn the Memphis native and two-time SEC long jump scorer a 10th-place outcome in a new event.
Kelly, a junior from Nashville, produced a fourth-place effort in the weight throw with the second-best mark of her career at 59 feet even. She recorded that measurement on her first toss of the competition. Sophomore Jessie Harrison finished ninth at 56-2, while classmate Aslynn Halvorson was 20th at 49-4 1/2.
Lady Vol freshman Allison Outerbridge made the finals in her first collegiate triple jump competition. The rookie from Sandys, Bermuda, carded a measurement of 37-7 3/4 on her second attempt and wound up ninth in a field of 22.
Vol sophomore Drew Thomas was 11th in the men's weight throw at 52-4, with former Vol Garland Porter taking first with a facility-record toss of 78-7 3/4.
In the high jump, sophomore Kevin Carney of Brentwood, who transferred to UT from Kentucky after the 2009 season, cleared 6-4 1/4 to finish 12th in his return to the Bluegrass State. Dual sport freshman Justin Hunter, meanwhile, passed on two heights and tried to come into the competition at 6-6 1/4. The standout wide receiver on the football team was unsuccessful in his three attempts at the bar. He is slated to compete Saturday in the long jump, an event in which he was the top-ranked performer in the nation as a high school senior.
The only other Lady Vol in action on Friday night was Linda Hadfield, who finished 12th in the pole vault. The freshman cleared the opening height of 10-8 on her first try but was unable to navigate the next bar (11-1 3/4).
Saturday's field event action resumes at 10:30 a.m. Running events get underway at 12:30 p.m.
