KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Following the first top-10 victory for the Tennessee Lady Vol swimming and diving team under head swimming coach Matt Kredich, the Southeastern Conference has awarded sophomore Kelsey Floyd and freshman Lindsay Gendron both of its weekly swimming honors on Tuesday.
Against the ninth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, Floyd, the SEC Swimmer of the Week, and Gendron, the league's Freshman of the Week, combined for seven wins, five of which were individual. The duo also recorded six NCAA B-cut times and rank first on the team in all eight events they competed in this past Saturday.
This is the second time this season Floyd has been tabbed the conference's Swimmer of the Week, as she won the award on Oct. 26.
In the dual against UVA, the Lexington, Ky., native posted three individual wins, highlighted by setting a new Lady Vol standard in the 200y fly with a first-place time of 1:56.68. Her mark broke the longest standing individual swimming record of 1:57.90 set in 1996 by Tori DeSilvia and also ranks 10th fastest in the nation.
Floyd was also a member of the first-place 200y medley relay squad that recorded a UT season-best time and B-cut time of 1:40.66. Her wins in the 100y fly (53.56) and 200y back (1:59.36) were also season-best clocking.
In addition to being named to the award, Floyd was also chosen as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week, as freshman basketball player Meighan Simmons was also a nominee. By Floyd being named the Lady Vol AOW, it marks the second time this season that a member of the swimming and diving team has been awarded that title, as Gendron received the honor on Nov. 22.
Gendron's efforts earned her the SEC Freshman of the Week honor as she continued her strong opening campaign by swimming a career-best and Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center pool record time of 9:45.71 in the 1000y free. Her time ranks second-fastest in the country and first in the conference.
The Bloomington, Ill., native also won the 500y free (4:48.80) and 400y free relay (3:20.11) in season-best and B cut times. With her three wins, Gendron has notched victories in at least two events in every meet she has competed in this season.
Simmons, a Cibolo, Texas, native opened up her SEC playing career by tallying double-figure in scoring in each contest, scoring 15 points against Alabama and a team leading 18 points against Ole Miss. She also dished 11 assists, a Lady Vol freshman record, against the Tide and shot 80 percent from the field against Ole Miss.
The Lady Vols are off until Jan. 22, when the team hosts No. 2 Georgia at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. The dual meet will be senior day for five members of the team and is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
