NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Two meets into her rookie season, Lady Vol cross country runner Amber Zimmerman has established a routine. The freshman from Knoxville paced Tennessee again Saturday morning at the Commodore Classic, finishing 17th out of 127 runners at Percy Warner Park.
After leading the team at the opener two weekends ago, Zimmerman covered today's 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 57.44 seconds to help the Big Orange women to a sixth-place finish out of 16 schools with 177 points. Host Vanderbilt ran away with the team title, accumulating 21 points to out-distance runner Lipscomb (54). Chattanooga was third with 97, followed by Belmont (113) and Middle Tennessee (136) rounding out the top five.
Sophomore Ramzee Fondren was the Lady Vols' number two runner, posting her highest-ever team scoring role by placing 37th overall (scoring 34th) in 19:40.86. Junior Elizabeth Tiller turned in another solid outing, navigating the course in a career-best 19:42.54 to wind up 38th (35th) overall as UT's third scorer.
Also contributing to the final tally were sophomore Ally Colvin and junior Elizabeth Altizer, who placed 57th (45th) and 59th (46th) in 20:07.57 and 20:10.14, respectively. UT's only other competitor was sophomore Andrea Ferri, who came in 65th in 20:24.06.
"Amber continues to show improvement," UT Director of Track & Field and Women's Cross Country Coach J.J. Clark said. "She is doing a really nice job for a freshman. Our team continues to get better as time goes on, and we're developing and continuing to get better as the season progresses."
Tennessee is idle next weekend, but the Lady Vols return to action on Oct. 1 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Brooks Paul Short Run. The 6K race, UT's first this season, is hosted by Lehigh.
