Magnuson Defends 100m Fly Title

IRVINE, Calif. - Former Lady Vol star Christine Magnuson defended her 100m fly national title on Tuesday by winning the event in 57.32, which is the fastest time in the world this year, at the ConocoPhillips National Championships. She qualified first for the final in the prelims with a mark of 57.51.
Competing for the club team Tucson Ford (Ariz.), Magnuson touched the halfway mark under world-record pace. The Tinley Park, Ill., native was a 23-time All-American at Rocky Top and won a pair of silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Rising sophomore Breana Folk finished 16th in the 200m IM B Final with a time of 2:17.55. Folk qualified in 14th with a time of 2:15.65 in the prelims to qualify for the finals.
Rising junior Jennifer Connolly and rising sophomores Kelsey Floyd and Brooke Watson also competed in the 100m fly. Connolly finished 38th overall in the prelims (1:01.38), Floyd claimed 41st (1:01.44) and Watson touched in 53rd (1:02.18).
In the 400m free prelims, rising senior Aleksa Akerfelds finished 58th with a time of 4:19.46, while incoming freshman Alexandria Frasier swam a time of 4:28.53 to place 101st.
On day two of the competition, Connolly and rising seniors Tricia Weaner and Morgan Farrell will compete in the 100m backstroke, while Floyd, Marifrances Henley, a swimmer at N.C. State who is competing for the Tennessee Aquatics club team, and signee Frasier are slated to take part in the 200m free.
