Tennessee swimmer Ryan Harrison qualified Friday for the European Swimming Championships with his fifth-place one minute 49.90 seconds finish in the 200 long course freestyle at the Charlotte Ultraswim Grand Prix.
"I'm thrilled to get that time," Harrison said. "It feels great to get that weight off my shoulders. I can't wait to get on with the meet and swim fast."
The Londonderry, Northern Ireland, native came up just short in the preliminary round. Harrison swam to a one minute 51 seconds time, just shy of the one minute 50.3 seconds time needed to qualify.
But he responded in the finals and punched his ticket to the European Swimming Championships, held Aug. 4-15, in Budapest Hungary.
Harrison swims again Saturday in the 400 freestyle.
