Tennessee sophomore diver qualified Sunday for the NCAA championships with a sixth-place finish on the one-meter springboard at the Zone B Diving Championships.
The Moultrie, Ga., native qualified with a 708.90 point combined mark at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The combined mark reflects the sum of the preliminary plus the final score.
"We are taking a big sigh of relief right now," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I am really excited for Ryan and now we can begin preparing for what comes next."
The top seven divers at the Zone B Diving Championships advance to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Ohio State March 25-27. Helms was the seventh to qualify.
The other six divers that qualified at the meet are Nick McCrory of Duke, Terry Horner of Florida State, Reuben Ross of Miami (Fla.), Kelly Marx of Auburn, Aaron Fleshner from Alabama and Landon Marzullo of Florida State.
