KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 13th-ranked Tennessee women's swimming and diving team will welcome eight teams to the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center to compete in the Tennessee Championship Qualification "Last Chance" Meet on Friday and Saturday.
The meet, featuring only swimming events, will give competitors a final opportunity to earn season-best performances in an effort to rise up the national lists before the NCAA Championships participants are announced next Wednesday.
Purdue is hosting the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships from March 18-20 in West Lafayette, Ind.
Event prelims will begin at 10 a.m. each day at the Last Chance Meet with finals starting at 6 p.m.
Despite having at least one NCAA provisional qualifier in every single event this season, the majority of Lady Vol swimmers are expected to compete.
"This meet serves a couple of functions for us," Lady Vol head coach Matt Kredich said. "For those who we think have swum fast enough to make NCAAs, it gives us an opportunity to swim some different events than we swam last week or to swim some events again to try some different tactics. For others, this is it - the name of the meet says it all. We're hopeful that we can pick up a few more swims this weekend that will get selected for the NCAA Championships."
UT had numerous performances that already solidified national meet spots last week at the SEC Championships in Athens, Ga.
Senior Michele King won the 50y free in a nation's best time (22.06), while the 200y medley relay (1:37.32) nabbed an automatic berth and the best clocking in the country.
King was joined on the relay by senior Alex Barsanti, sophomore Jenny Connolly and freshman Kelsey Floyd.
Barsanti also earned an A-cut in the 100y breast (59.97), placing second, while Connolly earned and a spot at NCAAs with her runner-up performance in the 100y back (52.10).
Overall, the Lady Vols captured their third-straight fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships, scoring 497 points. That point total is Tennessee's most under the standard top-16 scoring formula since 1997.
