Vols Third After Day One of SEC Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - After the first day of competition at the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, Tennessee is tied for third with Alabama with 85 points. Auburn and Florida are tied for first place at 100 points.
"We didn't get off to a great start today," head coach John Trembley said. "We have not positioned ourselves very well for tomorrow."
In the three-meter event, sophomore Ryan Helms took third place behind defending SEC champ Aaron Fleshner of Alabama and Auburn's Kelly Marx. Helms scored a 374.45. Senior Michael Muscari placed 10th (342.70), freshman Jordan Mauney placed 13th (318.35) and Knoxville, Tenn., native Sean Letsinger finished 19th (221.25).
Tennessee debuted at fourth in the first swimming event, the 200 medley relay. Behind a 1:26.09 B-cut time, the Vols squad of Ricky Henahan, Brad Craig, Michael DeRocco and Giles Smith placed fourth behind Auburn, Florida and LSU.
To wrap up the first day of competition, the Vols placed fifth in the 800 freestyle relay. Anders Storvik led off for UT followed by Ryan Harrison, mid-year enrollee Norbert Kovacs and co-captain Geoff Sanders. The relay team earned a 6:28.75 B-cut time.
Tomorrow's competition includes the men's one-meter diving final, 500 freestyle, 200 I.M., 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.
"We are a young team but we must step up tomorrow," Trembley said.
