Singles Solid on Day 1 of WFU Invite

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team kicked off play at the 2010 Wake Forest Invitational by sweeping singles play against Furman at the University Indoor Tennis Center on Friday.
The Lady Vols began the day by taking on NC State in doubles play. The Wolfpack took two of the three matches, including an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles by Sandhya Nagaraj/Sanaa Bhambri (NCSU) over Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols.
Whitney Wofford and Jennifer Meredith defeated Tana Illova and Joelle Kissell of NC State, 8-3.
Tennessee then faced off against Furman in singles play and swept all five matches in straight sets.
Alda beat Monica Arguello, 6-3, 6-1. Also victorious for the Big Orange were Nichols, Wofford and Kayla McMurry.
Sophomore Kata Szekely made her 2010-11 debut, showing little rust in beating Amanda Murray, 6-3, 6-1.
To conclude the day, UT took on doubles teams from Wake Forest and dropped both contests. Kathryn Talbert and Kayla Duncan of WF defeated Alda and Wofford, 8-6. Ryann Cutillo and Emilee Malvehy topped Nichols and Meredith, 8-5.
Freshman Brynn Boren and senior Maria Sorbello are not playing in this tournament because they are competing at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. this weekend.
Play will resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. Tennessee will face off with Furman in doubles play at 9 a.m.
