After a sluggish beginning on the second day of the Tennessee Invitational, the Tennessee swimming and diving team rebounded with strong finishes to close out competition.
Alabama still leads the field with a score of 829.5 points. Virginia Tech moved into second place at 639 points followed closely by Tennessee in third with 627.5 points and Kentucky in fourth at 389.
"We started this evening very flat," head coach John Trembley said. "We were just not where we needed to be. But Ryan Harrison and Michael DeRocco showed up with some brilliant races. Our breaststrokers and backstrokers swam very well, today, as did our divers."
Sophomore Ryan Harrison won the Vols' lone swimming win of the day in the 200 free with a B-cut time of one minute 37.46 seconds.
Michael DeRocco led most of the 100 butterfly before getting tapped out at the wall by Alabama's Anestis Arampatzis by one hundredth of a second. DeRocco's 48.01 seconds was, however, good enough for an NCAA B-cut.
Tennessee boasted a large contingent of breaststrokers in the finals of the 100 breast. Senior Brad Craig came in third behind a 56.12-second time, followed by Zack Burnett in fourth at 56.13 seconds, Renato Prono in fifth at 56.16 seconds, Derek Paul in sixth at 56.28 seconds and Jake Epperson in seventh at 56.59 seconds.
In the 100 back, junior Ricky Henahan led the way with a 48.66-second time with freshman Samuel Rairden close behind in fourth at 49.61 seconds. Anders Storvik finished 10th in 50.53 seconds.
In the diving competition, junior Ryan Helms won the three-meter with 376.70 points. Carrying the momentum of a career day on Thursday, sophomore Jordan Mauney returned on Friday, his birthday, and posted another career-best performance with a fourth-place 337.70-point score.
"Dave and I have really been working on my technique and things are really starting to work for me now," Mauney said. "After Ohio State, I realized how much I needed to work on my technique and that meet has really served as motivation to get better."
Sophomore Brent Sterling finished seventh behind a score of 294.45 points.
"Jordan definitely had a great day yesterday and he had an even better day today," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I worked really hard this week and I am glad to see him start to get where he needs to be. Ryan Helms also had a great day today. We threw a new dive in his rotation today and it didn't go so well, but he performed very well overall. Tomorrow should be another great day for us."
Swimming preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with finals for the mile freestyle starting at 4 p.m. Swimming finals will begin at 6 p.m. Platform diving will start at 1 p.m.
