KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Brynn Boren captured the singles title at the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Monday afternoon at the Knoxville Racquet Club, outlasting teammate Rosalía Alda, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
With the win, Boren advances to the singles draw of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. from Nov. 4-7.
UT co-head coach Mike Patrick said that going into the match, he knew one of his players would take the crown. He just wanted to see a good contest.
"I just hoped they played a great match and they did," Patrick said. "A couple of shots here and there changed the outcome but they both played great."
Alda jumped ahead early, taking the first set, 6-4, and led 5-3 in second set. Facing match point, Boren was able to break Alda and eventually win the second frame, 7-5.
The freshman from Laguna Niguel, Calif. said that moment seemed to change things in the match.
"At that point, I was just trying to stay in the match," Boren said. "I just tried to fight as hard as I could and I knew she wasn't going to let up. She wanted to close the match out. She was putting tons of pressure on me and I think that winning the second set was a big momentum changer."
Boren took the third set, 6-2, and with it, the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Region Singles Championship. She had already secured a bid to the ITA Indoors by capturing the doubles title of the Ohio Valley Regional with teammate Maria Sorbello.
Patrick said that regardless of today's outcome, Boren and Alda's success in this tournament means nothing but good things for the program.
"These two played the best during this tournament and they deserved to be here," Patrick said. "Brynn won today but Rosalía played great. Hopefully (Rosalía) will come back and keep improving."
The field for the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor tournament consists of the singles and doubles champions from each of the 12 USTA/ITA regions. The singles field has 8 Riviera/ITA All-American quarterfinalists, one Super Bowl Champion, one host wildcard, one USTA wildcard, 2 ITA wildcards and seven at-large selections.
