Tennessee couldn't take advantage of prime scoring conditions and the Vols slipped to eighth place after two rounds at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough.

Darren Renwick fired his second consecutive 71 and Robin Wingardh added a 2-under-par 70, but those were just two of the 26 individual scores below par Saturday at The Ridges Golf and Country Club. On Friday, only six golfers found red figures in the blustery conditions.

UT combined for a 2-over-par 290 that was nine strokes better than Friday's effort. But the team's two-day total of 13-over-par 589 remains 18 shots off the pace of 36-hole leader Kent State (571). Virginia carded Saturday's best score, 278, to climb into second place at 575, with UNC Wilmington (578), Chattanooga (582) and Wake Forest (582) rounding out the top five.

Wingardh began his day for the Vols in super fashion, birdieing holes 2, 3 and 4 and then birdieing the very difficult ninth for a front-side 33. Two more birdies helped offset three bogeys on the back nine and Wingardh moved to a tie for 15th place with a two-day total of even-par 144.

Renwick also made birdie at the par-4, 474-yard ninth hole to cap a front-side 36. Birdies at the 10th and 15th holes helped balance a late bogey at No. 17 and the junior finds himself in a tie for eighth place at 2-under 142.

Freshman Max Smith improved five strokes from Friday to a 1-over-par 73. Smith birdied the par-4 fifth and par-5 14th holes before bogeying the 17th and 18th for the second day in a row. The Berkshire, England, product is tied for 42nd place at 7-over 151.

Garrick Porteous carded a second straight 76. The junior was 3 over on the front nine before recording his first birdie of the round at the par-4 11th. Another birdie at the par-5 14th helped Porteous to a back-nine score of 37 and a two-day total of 8-over 152 that has him in a tie for 48th place.

Jay Vandeventer recorded one of just three eagles on Saturday and the only one at the par-5 eighth hole, measuring 534 yards. The sophomore improved by six strokes to 77 over his Friday effort and is tied for 71st place at 16-over 160.

Freshman Marshall Talkington also is in the group at 16-over 160 after his 82 on Saturday. Talkington is competing in this weekend's event as an individual.

Kent State's Mackenzie Hughes and Missouri's Jace Long share the 36-hole individual lead at 6-under-par 138.

Tennessee's third and final round begins Sunday morning at 8:30 on the No. 1 tee, with the Vols playing alongside North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Weather conditions call for temperatures to still be in the 30s when UT begins play, headed for an afternoon high of 74 under sunny skies and light winds.
