BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Tennessee women's cross country team didn't have one of its better days on Friday, struggling to a 38th-place finish out of 41 teams at the rain-soaked Brooks Paul Short Run.
The Lady Vols, who navigated Lehigh University's 6,000-meter Goodman Campus Course on the heels of an eight-inch rain event in the area, tallied 1,127 points. No. 6 Georgetown claimed the title with 34 points, followed by No. 16 Virginia (98), James Madison (169), Cornell (198) and Columbia (205) rounding out the top five.
For the third straight meet, freshman Amber Zimmerman paced UT, covering the distance in 22 minutes, 36 seconds to place 152nd and score in 142nd position.
Also contributing to the cause for Tennessee were sophomore Ally Colvin in 246th (220nd) at 23:24, junior Elizabeth Tiller in 286th (245th) at 23:46, sophomore Andrea Ferri in 303rd (252nd) at 23:58 and sophomore Ramzee Fondren in 336th (268th) at 24:41. Junior Elizabeth Altizer ran but did not count in the score, finishing 342nd (271st) in 24:58.
"We're a little short-handed right now and missing some key players," Lady Vol Director of Track & Field and Women's Cross Country Coach J.J. Clark said. "We're looking forward to inserting them (Brittany Sheffey, Chanelle Price, Erica Moore) within the next two meets or so. We'll continue to move forward and look for improvement as the weeks go by."
Tennessee did have a development that could bode well for track season. Liz Costello, a transfer from Princeton who has only eligibility on the oval remaining, won the women's Open division race as an unattached competitor in 21:08. That time would have placed 24th in the gold race. Former Lady Vol Phoebe Wright was third behind Costello in 21:38.
The UT women swing back into action in two weeks, as they head to the Penn State National meet in University Park, Pa., on Oct. 16.
