On day one of the Georgia Diving Invitational, Tennessee's sophomore diver Ryan Helms beat out a tough field of 41 competitors to claim the three-meter championship.
"Ryan used a brand new dive in the finals and it went for 74 points," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He is showing his experience in his dives and that is what we want to see."
The Moultrie, Ga., native swept the prelims and the finals of the men's three-meter. With a score of 394.05, Helms beat out some of the SEC's top divers to win the event. Kelly Marx of Auburn finished second and Alabama's Aaron Fleshner and Adam Booher placed third and fourth, respectively.
UT's lone senior diver and team co-captain Michael Muscari placed 11th (323.60). The Morristown, Tenn., native finished seventh in the preliminary rounds.
Freshman Jordan Mauney placed 18th with a 277.90 mark.
Sunday night the event will host a "shootout," in which divers will each perform a dive with the lowest score being eliminated each round until the field is narrowed to its final two competitors.
The diving continues Monday with the men's one-meter event. Results can be found at UTsports.com.
