Tennessee's Darren Renwick capped another strong showing on his native British golf links with a runner-up finish for the Tillman Trophy in Burnham-On-Sea, England.
Renwick, who Thursday was named to the 2009 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, was tied for the lead after two days of play and tied again after Thursday's opening 18 holes with defending champion Dale Whitnell. But Whitnell bettered Renwick by four strokes over the final 18 to reclaim the trophy for another year.
Renwick stood at even par entering Thursday's action before shooting a 3-under 68 in the morning, matching Whitnell's score. Representing Hill Barn Golf Club from his hometown of Worthing, Renwick shot 1 over par in the afternoon to finish at 2-under 282 for the tournament.
Last month, Renwick tied for third place at the British Amateur Championships. He lost 4 and 3 to eventual champion Matteo Manassero of Italy, who on Thursday matched Tiger Woods' score of 1 over par at the British Open in Turnberry, Scotland.
Renwick earned Freshman All-SEC honors for the Vols in 2009 after catching fire in the spring and turning in three top-20s in a four-tournament span. His first appearance in NCAA postseason play resulted in a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional that was the best of his young collegiate career. For the season, Renwick finished with a 74.06 stroke average for 33 rounds.
HOLMES RALLIES AT SOUTHERN AMATEUR
Knoxville native David Holmes bounced back from an opening-round 73 to shoot 68 Thursday at the rain-delayed Southern Amateur in Memphis.
Holmes finished his second round with four birdies and 14 pars to climb into the top 25 as of this writing. The second round was delayed by rain and several golfers remained on the course.
