EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Tennessee senior Sarah Bowman, running her final race in a Lady Vol uniform, came up short Saturday night in her quest to earn a trip to this summer's IAAF World Championships. The 10-time All-American ended her Big Orange career with an 11th-place finish in the 1500 meters at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
The UT standout officially covered the distance in four minutes, 16.29 seconds. Knoxvillian Treniere Clement, a three-time U.S. champion who also is coached by UT Director of Track & Field J.J. Clark, wound up fifth in 4:09.10.
Bowman got out well but found herself in the middle of a tight pack over the first 100 meters. The severe bumping she suffered from the close quarters early on, to her credit, didn't knock her out of contention immediately. That tiring experience, though, seemed to wear on her over the final lap and a half. As a result, she was unable to improve upon last year's eighth-place outing at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Aslynn Halvorson, who will join the squad as a freshman this fall, charted a third-place finish in the junior discus throw, just missing a trip to the Pan Am Junior Championships. The product of Matthews, N.C., and Butler High School unleashed a career-best toss of 169 feet, five inches (51.63m) on her fifth throw to move into second place and what appeared to be a Pan Am berth. Erin Pendleton, however, came through with a measurement that was two centimeters farther (169-5 ft./51.65m) on her final attempt and nabbed the second international bid. Anastasia Jelmini took top honors with a fling of 174-10.
Two current Lady Vols advanced to the finals in their respective junior events. Freshman Chanelle Price posted the fastest first-round readout in the 800 meters, running a time of two minutes, 6.32 seconds to win heat two and earn a shot Sunday at a trip to the Pan Am Juniors meet in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, July 31-Aug. 2.
"I just wanted to get out and hold the lead, Price said. "The goal is to have fun. It's been such a hectic season; I'm looking to try and PR (in the final)."
Rookie Ellen Wortham, meanwhile, moved along to the final in the 400m hurdles, posting the seventh fastest readout in the qualifying round at 1:00.62. Classmate Ramzee Fondren wound up 10th in 2:12.83 in the junior 800m first round and did not advance.
In the senior division, UT senior Celriece Law advanced out of the first round and into the semifinals of the 100m hurdles with a 13.15 readout. That mark left her sixth in heat one and 15th of the qualifiers.
In addition to Price, Wortham and Law competing on Sunday, Tennessee will have junior Phoebe Wright in the final of the 800 meters and former Lady Vol Tianna Madison in the long jump final.
NBC will televise Sunday's final day of action starting at 4 p.m. ET.
