UT's Essex Wins Pole Vault at WKU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The University of Tennessee's Alicia Essex collected her third victory in the pole vault in as many meets, doing so Saturday afternoon at the Western Kentucky Invitational.
Essex, a senior from Purcellville, Va., was the only Lady Vol in action at WKU, but she made an impact. For the third straight meet, she came away a winner in the pole vault, this time clearing 12 feet, four inches to capture first-place honors. She owns the No. 2 vault ever by a Lady Vol at 13-7 1/4 this season.
Out in LaJolla, Calif., meanwhile, the throwers were in action at the UCSD Triton Invitational. Sophomore Annie Alexander once again delivered UT's best performance, taking second place in the shot put at 51-7 1/4. Arizona State's Sarah Stevens took top honors at 55-5 1/2. Lady Vol rookies Laquoya Kelly and Akeela Bravo, meanwhile, finished 16th and 29th, respectively, with best tosses of 44-0 and 35-5 1/4.
In the javelin throw, sophomore Holly Kane was the Big Orange's top finisher. She placed fourth with a fling of 134-4. Redshirt freshman Brittany Napoli, meanwhile, was 15th at 100-11.
