Tennessee sophomore Joseph Berry cleared a height of 5.30m (17-4.5) to win the championship section of the pole vault Saturday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. The win was Tennessee's second of the meet and 72nd all-time dating to the 1949 meet. The Vols' sprint medley relay unit earned the program's 33rd relay wheel on Friday.
Also in the pole vault, freshman Michael Seaman finished eighth with an NCAA regional-qualifying and lifetime-best clearance of 5.05m (16-6.75). Seaman is Tennessee's third pole vault competitor to earn a regional berth, joining Berry and Michael Ayers.
At the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif., Brenard Wilson cleared a height of 2.10m (6-10.75) to finish second in the high jump and meet the regional-qualifying standard. The Vols now have a total of 19 regional qualifiers with one regular-season meet remaining before the SEC Championships.
"The bright spots of the day were Joe and Mike at the Penn Relays and Brenard out here," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said from San Diego. "It's good to see Joe coming into form as we get closer to the conference meet, and we were able to get a couple more guys into regional competition. We'll turn our focus to preparing for those meets in the next two weeks."
In other action from Philadelphia, Akeem Hardnett earned a 12th-place finish in the triple jump with a top leap of 14.84m (18-8.25), and UT's 4x800m relay grouping of Axel Mostrag, Emerson Peacock, Mike Spooner and Joseph Franklin finished eighth with a season-best clocking of 7:24.06.
On the West Coast, Tennessee had five athletes in action in addition to Wilson. Nathaniel Couture posted a mark of 59.00m (193-7) in the javelin to place seventh, while Ayers and Zane Breakiron finished 17th and 19th, respectively, with tosses of 50.10m (164-4) and 47.71m (156-6). Nick Panezich earned an eighth-place finish in the shot put with a top throw of 16.95m (55-7.5), and Richard Wooten placed 12th in the hammer throw with a final mark of 57.96m (190-2).
Tennessee will host the Smoky Mountain Twilight on May 5 before traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for the SEC Championships on May 14-17.
