LaJOLLA, Calif. -- University of Tennessee sophomore Annie Alexander improved upon her NCAA-leading mark in the discus Friday afternoon, charting the seventh-best throw in school history at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
Alexander, who entered the meet with a season best of 187 feet, 10 inches from last weekend's Volunteer Track Classic, uncorked a new 2009 topper with a toss of 188-9. That stood as the best measurement by a college performer at the meet and helped the product of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago finish fourth overall. Unattached competitor Summer Pierson won with a fling of 193-1. Alexander's teammate and countrywoman Akeela Bravo, a freshman, was 45th at 124-4.
Earlier in the day, in the hammer throw, Bravo charted a career-best of 156-7 to place 23rd. Rookie Laquoya Kelly was 27th at 151-1, while sophomore Holly Kane finished 39th at 125-9.
The throwers will be back in action at the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday, competing in the javelin and shot put. Pole vaulter Alicia Essex, meanwhile, is slated to compete at the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky.
