Tough playing conditions pushed Tennessee down the leaderboard Monday at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The Vols dropped from fifth to eighth place after shooting a 23-over-par 311 in windy weather at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course.
LSU was the only squad to post a better score on Monday than on Sunday, and the Tigers' 7-over 295 vaulted them into first place as a team at 591 or 15 over par. First-day leader Arizona State is second at 17-over, followed by Georgia Southern (24-over), UAB (28-over) and Georgia State (31-over).
The Vols own a two-day total of 610 and stand 34 over par.
Freshman Darren Renwick paced UT on Monday with a 4-over 76 that bumped him from a tie for 24th to a tie for 16th on the individual leaderboard. The Worthing, England, product -- now 7-over for the tournament -- was especially tough on the back nine, firing eight consecutive pars before birdieing the par-5 18th for the second straight day.
Senior Chris Paisley shot a 5-over 77. It was an uphill climb for the Newcastle, England, native after a double-bogey on the second hole led to a 5-over 41 on the front side. But Paisley rallied with an even par backside and stands in a tie for 13th overall at plus-6.
Robin Wingardh also shot 77 Monday. The sophomore from Morarp, Sweden, posted his lone birdie on No. 8, but kept the damage to a minimum and then finished the afternoon with five consecutive pars. Wingardh stands in a tie for 29th at 9 over par.
Juniors David Holmes and James Brannen each fired 81s to round out the Tennessee lineup. Holmes had a pair of double-bogeys, one on each side, and sits in a tie for 45th at plus-12. Brannen also had a couple of double-bogeys, both coming on the front nine, but steadied himself with a backside 39 that left him 15 over par and in a tie for 62nd place.
Winds should remain a factor during Tuesday's final round. The forecast for Florida's northeastern coast calls for east-northeasterly breezes at 10-15 miles per hour, with temperatures climbing into the lower 60s. Live results from the tournament can be found at UTsports.com or golfstat.com.
