Tennessee's David Holmes birdied five of his final nine holes Monday and stands in sixth place after two rounds of the 35th annual Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas.
Holmes shot 68-67 Monday to finish his first 36 holes at 7-under-par 135 on the Par 71 layout at El Paso Country Club. The final round of 18 holes is set for Tuesday.
The elite invitational event includes 32 All-America golfers from a year ago representing 27 schools, making it the largest field in the tournament's history. Holmes joined seven other players from the SEC, which tied the Pac-10 for most entries with eight.
Holmes trails leader Dustin Garza of Wichita State by four shots. Garza is at 11-under 131, two shots clear of Alabama's Hunter Hamrick and Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffman at 9-under 133. Georgia's Russell Henley and Washington's Nick Taylor at tied for fourth at 8-under 134, followed by Holmes all alone in sixth.
The Knoxville native recorded seven birdies over his first 18 holes, only to give three shots back via bogeys. Holmes had streaks of three birdies over holes 12-16, and then three more on holes 1-6. He finished his morning with a birdie at the par-5 ninth to settle in a tie for 12th.
Starting at No. 1 in the afternoon, Holmes played his front nine in 1 over par, recording a lone bogey at the par-3 third. He then caught fire over his final nine holes, recording birdies at Nos. 10, 12, 13, 15 and 17 to reach 7 under par and solo sixth place.
Last season, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic ranked as the No. 1 tournament in the country for the fifth consecutive season, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Throughout the years, many of the tournament's competitors have gone on to successful careers on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Matt Kuchar (1999), Davis Love III (1984), Chris Nallen (2003), Jerry Pate (1974), Nicholas Thompson (2004) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Each university is awarded a $1,000 scholarship in the name of the golfer competing in the tournament.
