Tennessee's best golf of the weekend in Monday's final round of the Windon Memorial Classic couldn't budge a strong field of northern squads as the Vols finished seventh in Glencoe, Ill.

UT, ranked No. 1 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, shot 9-over-par 293 Monday and finished at 891 in its first true road test this season. Sixth-ranked Illinois (868) was steady throughout to claim a six-stroke victory over host Northwestern (874), followed by Kent State (876), Eastern Michigan (882), Michigan (888) and Coastal Carolina (890). Minnesota (893) tied for eighth place, making seven of the top eight finishers from within the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50.

Coastal Carolina's Dan Obremski and Kent State's Brett Cairns shared medalist honors at 1-over 214.

Vols junior Robin Wingardh tied for ninth individually at 6-over 219 despite triple-bogeying the final hole. The par-4, 464-yard 18th was this tournament's toughest challenge, ranking no worse than second in difficulty each of the three rounds.

Wingardh, who shot 74 to complete Sunday's suspended second round, carded a pair of birdies on both nines Monday in recording his seventh career and second consecutive top-10 finish.

Darren Renwick and Justin Walker tied for 30th at 12-over 225, although Renwick's 77 did not score for the Vols while Walker's 73 tied his career best.

Walker improved with each round at the Windon, jumping from an opening 77 to a 75 in the suspended Round 2 and finishing off his second career-low tournament score in as many starts. The Greenbriar sophomore birdied his first hole Monday and gave back only three bogeys the rest of the way.

Renwick's 73 led the Vols in the suspended second round, but he played Monday's final 18 holes without a birdie. His final-round 77 tied the second-worst score of his young UT career.

David Holmes tied for 42nd place at 14-over 227, finishing a tough weekend on a positive note with a birdie on his 54th and final hole. The Knoxville senior, who shot 78 in the suspended round, finished with a 75 Monday that including three birdies, five bogeys and a double on the par-4 eighth.

Cameron Lawrence saved his best round for Monday, carding a 73 despite triple-bogeying the par-3 12th. Lawrence opened the tournament 78-77, but began his final round with four birdies over the first eight holes. After the miscue at No. 12, he played his final nine holes for the day 1 over par and finished in a tie for 47th at 15-over 228.

UT is halfway through its four-tournament fall schedule, returning to action Oct. 16-18 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in nearby Jonesborough.
