Vols Compete in Two Field Events to Open UK Invitational

The Tennessee track and field team opened the Kentucky Invitational with entrants in two field events Friday night at Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky. One Vol, thrower Matthew Maloney, notched a personal best in the weight throw.
"We had two good events in the high jump and the weight throw," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "The competition was good, and those guys that competed last week improved this week, so I'm pleased with how we did tonight. Everybody made the final of their event and we competed well."
All three of Tennessee's competitors finished in the top 10 in the weight throw, led by Richard Wooten, who finished seventh with a toss of 18.76m (61-6.75). Maloney came in one place behind Wooten with a personal-best throw of 18.15m (59-06.75), bettering his previous top mark by four inches. Nick Panezich finished 10th with a mark of 17.85m (58-6.75).
Brenard Wilson was the top finisher among three Vols in the high jump. The junior finished sixth with a final height of 1.99m (6-6.25) in his first competition of the season. Tennessee's two heptathletes also participated and finished 15th and 16th. Both Matthew Best and Michael Ayers cleared 1.89m (6-2.25), but Best earned the higher place based on his fewer number of misses.
The meet resumes Saturday at 12 p.m. ET with the long jump, while running events are set to begin at 12:30. Live results will be available throughout the day at www.ukathletics.com.
