KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee junior swimmer Michele King was named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after winning two individual events and swimming a leg on four victorious relays as UT defeated No. 11 Indiana, No. 19 Michigan and Illinois in a quad meet on Jan. 9-10 at the Councilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
King earned first-place in the 50y free with time of 22.94 and took top honors in the 100y free with a performance of 50.03. Both times were Lady Vol season-bests and just off the NCAA `B' cut standard.
The junior from York, Pa., anchored the 200y medley relay to victory in an NCAA `B' cut time of 1:41.57, and also participated in the winning 200y free (1:32.47), 400y free (3:22.85) and 400 medley (3:42.56) relays. The 200y and 400y free relays both finished with season-best times.
Behind King, the 13th-ranked Lady Vol swimming and diving team was able to remain undefeated on the season at 8-0 after scoring 1,454 points. Indiana was second with 1,294.5, Michigan third at 714 and Illinois fourth with 186.5.
King is a 10-time All-American and earned runner-up in the 50y free at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a school record performance of 21.86. Additionally, she has swam a leg on all five school record relay teams, set the Lady Vol record in the 100y breast (1:00.46) and was named All-SEC First Team in 2008.
This past summer, she was 10th in the 50m free at the U.S. Olympic Trials and also tied for first in the same event at the U.S. Open, which earned her a spot on the U.S. Team for the 2009 World University Games.
King and the Lady Vols return to action Saturday, Jan. 24, when they welcome Georgia for a 2 p.m. showdown at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
