Sept. 30, 2008
Sophomore Robin Wingardh tied for medalist honors and the No. 6 Tennessee men's golf team finished second as the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational concluded Tuesday at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Wingardh followed up his 4-under-par 67 by scoring par or better on 15 of 18 holes to finish at even par on Tuesday, including three straight birdies on the front nine from Nos. 6 to 8. He finished the tournament at 6 under par and tied for the individual title with Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffman.
The individual title is Wingardh's first of his career, improving on his previous-best performance, a tie for fifth place at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Nov. 2007.
As a team, the Vols shot an 8-over-par 292 in the final round, and finished with a team score of 7-over-par 859. Oklahoma State went wire-to-wire to take home the team championship, 16 strokes ahead of Tennessee. The Cowboys shot even-par on the final day and finished the tournament 9 under. No. 17 Georgia finished third at 7 over, followed by Southern California in fourth and Alabama in fifth.
"We are very proud of the way our team played," Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. "It was a real solid performance. We were elated for Robin who played superbly, which allowed him to get off to a great start for his fall. It was terrific to see Cameron play so well, we were excited for him and it bodes well for him and our team in the future. The way that he and the team played this week was a very positive sign for our program."
Cameron Lawrence also finished in the top 10 for the Volunteers. The sophomore fired a 4-over-par 75 to finish the tournament at 1 under par and tied for eighth place. Lawrence's fifth-place finish, 54-hole total of 212 and first-round 68 all set career-bests for the Brentwood native.
Junior David Holmes was next for UT tied for 24th place. Holmes fired a 5-over-par 76 in the final round and finished the tournament at 6 over par.
Chris Paisley shot his best round of the tournament, a 1-under-par 70, earning him a tie for 31st place. The senior jumped 17 spots after starting the tournament with two rounds over par. He finishes the tournament at 8 over.
Freshman Darren Renwick rounded out the Tennessee lineup. Renwick finished 61st after shooting a 7-over-par 78. The highlight of his round was an eagle on No. 8.
The Volunteers travel next to the Wolf Pack Classic, Oct. 6-7 at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno, Nev.
