The No. 6 Tennessee men's golf team will travel this weekend to Toledo, Ohio to face off against some of the nation's top golf teams. The 20th annual PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational begins Sunday, Sept. 28 and runs through Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Inverness Club.
The Preview provides teams expected to compete at the 2009 NCAA Championships an opportunity to play Inverness' par-71, 7,255-yard layout prior to the event next spring, which the University of Toledo will host. This year's Preview features eight teams ranked in the top 10 of Golfweek's preseason poll, and 14 of the top 25.
"Playing in the Preview is really an indication of your team's success over the past season," Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. "In order to receiver an invitation to this event, your team must be ranked in the top 10 of the Golfweek Poll. Last year I believe we ended up 10th. This was a significant step in our program. It was the highest ranking of our team during my coaching tenure here at Tennessee."
The field for the event includes (with current Golfweek ranking) Alabama, Arizona State, Charlotte, No. 5 Chattanooga, No. 11 Clemson, No. 12 Florida, Florida State, No. 17 Georgia, No. 22 Georgia Tech, Kent State, Oklahoma State, Southern California, No.6 Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Toledo.
Oklahoma State has appeared in all 19 Previews with Arizona State, Clemson and Florida ranking second in appearances with 17. The Cowboys, Sun Devils and Tigers are tied for first in Preview wins with three apiece.
Last year, Charlotte edged Oklahoma State by four strokes to win the team title at the Preview, hosted by Purdue University. Charlotte's Stefan Wiedgergruen took medalist honors.
Tennessee's lineup features Chris Paisley, Robin Wingardh, Darren Renwick, David Holmes and Cameron Lawrence.
Paisley will play at the No. 1 position for UT. The senior got his season off to a good start with a tie for fourth-place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Sept. 14.
Wingardh will be at the No. 2 position. He got off to a rocky start at the Carpet Capital but played his best golf of the weekend on the final day and jumped 18 spots to finish tied for 13th.
Renwick follows next for the Volunteers at No.3. The freshman will be making his second appearance of his UT career, which he opened with a top-25 finish.
Next in the No.4 position is junior David Holmes. The Knoxville native has the second-most career tournament appearances on the team.
Rounding out the Tennessee lineup at No. 5 is sophomore Cameron Lawrence who saw action in three tournaments last season. A Brentwood native, Lawrence has a career scoring average of 77.67.
The 54-hole tournament begins Sunday with tee times beginning at noon Eastern time. The second round starts on Monday at 9:00 a.m., while Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m.
