The Tennessee baseball team is set to begin fall practice next week at Robert M. Lindsay Field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The coaching staff is conducting open-campus walk-on tryouts Monday and Tuesday before team practice gets underway on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
This year's fall drills are highlighted by the second annual Orange & White World Series, a best-of-seven intrasquad competition. The Vols will be split into two teams via a draft, with one squad coached by infielders coach Bradley LeCroy and the other led by pitching coach Fred Corral. All seven games will be played no matter the series outcome.
The World Series games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
All games will take place at UT's new-look home facility. Fan attendance at the World Series games is encouraged, and attendance is free.
"We've set up some of our World Series games this year to coincide with home football weekends," UT head coach Todd Raleigh said. "Fans who are in town for the Northern Illinois, Mississippi State and Alabama football games can stop by the baseball stadium the Friday night before the game and enjoy some free baseball.
"It's also a great way to catch a glimpse of what our team--and our stadium--will look like this spring. We've got a lot of new players that we're excited about, and the improvements to the stadium and field have everyone fired up as well."
The baseball program also is celebrating its Alumni Weekend Oct. 17-18. Activities include a Friday morning golf outing, dinner at Lindsey Nelson Stadium prior to Friday night's Orange & White World Series game and a baseball tailgate before Saturday's gridiron clash with Mississippi State. Former players interested in attending should call (865) 974-9118 for more information.
VOLS FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY GOING STRONG
The Tennessee baseball team announced last week that it was once again raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk, which takes place Thursday, Oct. 2 at Knoxville's Volunteer Landing.
The team already has raised more than 25 percent of its $10,000 goal, as generous fans have pledged a total of $2,625 in less than one full week of active fundraising.
