BYDGOSZCZ, Poland -- Lady Vol sprinter Jeneba Tarmoh is a world champion. Representing the United States, the University of Tennessee freshman rocketed to the 100-meter dash title Wednesday at the 21st-annual IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships at Bydgoszcz City Stadium.
Tarmoh, who hails from San Jose, Calif., got out of the blocks well and rolled down the straightway in 11.37 seconds to cruise to victory. Her triumph was the second of the day for Team USA, as Marquise Goodwin earlier won the long jump with a personal best of 25 feet, 4 3/4 inches.
Ashlee Nelson of Great Britain was second behind Tarmoh in 11.49, while Sheniqua Ferguson of the Bahamas was third in 11.52. American teammate Shayla Mahan took fifth in 11.66.
The international 100-meter title is the third by a Lady Vol sprinter in the past four seasons. Tarmoh???s Big Orange teammates, Cleo Tyson and Lynne Layne, zipped to sprint wins at the Pan Am Junior Championships in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Additionally, UT???s Sarah Bowman won a Pan Am Juniors 1500m crown in 2005 and Shanna Dickenson was runner-up in the discus that season.
Tarmoh is among those in the pool for the U.S. 4x100m relay team. The prelims are on Friday, and the final is on Saturday. Tyson and Layne each ran legs on victorious U.S. tandems in their trips to Pan Am Juniors.
