King Places 6th in 100 Free at U.S. Open

MINNIAPOLIS, Minn. ??? Rising Lady Vol junior Michele King placed sixth in the finals of the 100m free with a time of 56.16 at the U.S. Open on Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
King, a 10-time All-America selection, was seeded sixth in the finals after swimming a career-best 56.03 in her 100m free preliminary heat.
The York, Pa., native finished 45th in the event at the 2008 U.S Olympic Trials in June.
King will compete in her best event, the 50m free, on Saturday. She made it to the semifinals in the event at the Olympic Trials and finished 10th overall. Her Trials performance of 25.43 is the third-fastest time entered. The prelims begin at 9 a.m. and the finals will follow at 6 p.m.
King was runner-up at the NCAA Championships in the 50y free and won a Southeastern Conference title as a member of the 200y free relay this past season.
The U.S. Open will serve as the selection meet for the 2009 World University Games, to be held from July 2-7, 2009, in Belgrade, Serbia. The highest placing athlete in each event who will be enrolled as a full-time university student through Jan. 1, 2009 will to be invited to the World University Games Team.
