KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- With the SEC Outdoor Championships looming next week, eight members of the University of Tennessee women???s track & field team will take advantage of one final tune-up meet this weekend. That group of Lady Vols will be in Athens, Ga., on Friday to take part in the Georgia Invitational at Spec Towns Track.
UT???s contingent will be entered in six different events. The projected Big Orange competitors include sophomore Jackie Areson (Delray Beach, Fla.) in the 1500 meters, junior Alicia Essex (Purcellville, Va.) and sophomore Katie O???Connell (Collierville, Tenn.) in the pole vault, freshman Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and seniors Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) in the discus throw, Alexander and McKell in the shot put, Dickenson and freshman Taylor Rotella (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the hammer throw and freshman Holly Kane (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the javelin throw.
???With this meet, primarily for our throwers, we???re just trying to keep their rhythm going and work on their technical aspects. Our vaulters have not really competed in a couple of weeks (since Sea Ray Relays), so this gives them an opportunity to stay sharp.
???With Jackie coming off an injury a little while back, she needs as many races as she can possibly get. We thought, with school out, this would be a nice, close meet. We???re looking forward to going down there and getting ready for the conference meet.???
The event, which will feature athletes from only a handful of schools, is slated to begin with field events at 9 a.m. and running events at 12:15 p.m. The women???s discus is the final event and should be completed by around 6:15 p.m.
