Tennessee ended the third day of competition Saturday at the SEC Outdoor Championships in Auburn, Ala., with 21 points and a sixth-place standing after six events. The Vols earned two personal-best marks and three additional season-best marks Saturday at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
???We picked up unexpected points in the long jump and scrapped for a point in the discus,??? head coach Bill Webb said. ???We qualified well and are in a position to have a strong final day. I would guess we have just about as many competitors in the finals as any other team. We will need a strong day tomorrow because the team race is going to be tight.???
Tennessee earned three points between the two field events contested Saturday. Sophomore Brenard Wilson finished seventh in his first SEC championship long jump competition with a personal-best and regional-qualifying leap of 24-1 3/4. Junior Nick Panezich finished eighth in the discus with his throw of 175-7. Sophomore Jonathan Fluellen long jumped 21-6 3/4 and finished 16th in his first SEC meet. In the day???s only other final, freshman Chris Rapp finished 15th in the steeplechase in his SEC championship debut.
One day after defending his SEC title and becoming just the fifth UT athlete to break the 8,000-point barrier in the decathlon, Jangy Addy qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles with his 13.83 clocking, which ranks him fourth in the preliminaries. Freshman Charlton Rolle also qualified for the finals with a 13.92 time that ranked seventh. Sophomore De???Lon Isom finished 10th and missed the finals by seven-thousandths of a second after the scoreboard flashed identical 13.98 times for both Isom and Ryan Fontenot of LSU, who claimed the ninth and final lane in Sunday???s final.
Tennessee qualified three runners for the finals of the 100. Seniors Rubin Williams and Matthieu Pritchett, as well as sophomore Evander Wells, advanced to Sunday???s final after Wells ran a personal-best time of 10.31 to win his heat and Pritchett clocked a season-best 10.42 and finished second in the same heat. Williams ran the straightaway in 10.30, but enters the finals with the seventh-best lane choice because he earned the first at-large birth in the finals after finishing third in his heat. All three sprinters also are qualified for Sunday???s 200 final. Tennessee is the only school with at least three athletes in two different finals. The Vols
Senior Andrew Dawson qualified for the finals of the 1,500 after moving from fifth to second during the final 100 meters of his heat. His 3:50.80 time places him fourth entering Sunday???s final. Freshman Michael Spooner just missed his personal-best time of 3:56.43 as he finished the race in 3:56.99.
Sophomore Kyle Stevenson ran a season-best time of 10.58 and finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 100, while senior Blake Jones recorded a time of 10.81. Sophomores Samdi Fraser and Nathan Grace finished the preliminaries of the 400 in 47.68 and 48.24, respectively.
The Vols enter Sunday???s final day of competition with 10 qualifiers in five finals. Tennessee also has competitors in the 5,000, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, high jump, pole vault, triple jump, shot put and javelin.
Arkansas leads the team race with 45 points. The SEC Outdoor Championships conclude Sunday with the javelin kicking off events at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
