Track & Field Extends Coast to Coast

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women???s track & field team will split up its squad in coast-to-coast fashion this weekend in order to participate in two different meets. The 21st-ranked Lady Vols will be represented at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on Friday and at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville on Friday and Saturday.
As he did a year ago, UT Head Coach J.J. Clark will travel westward with junior Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.), hoping to give her the advantage of a great distance running climate and level of competition to garner an NCAA qualifying mark in the 10,000 meters. Van Horn is slated to run at 10:29 p.m. Eastern Time and will be trying to top the personal-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying effort of 34:34.91 she achieved a year ago at the Cardinal???s Cobb Track.
???Last year at Stanford, the entire field qualified for the national meet in the 10K,??? Clark said. ???Unfortunately, Katie got hurt later in the season, but she was someone who would have made the NCAA meet based on her time. We would like to go there and put a strong mark on the board that would get her to the NCAA meet. It???s important to do that, because the 10K is one of only two events that utilizes the auto/provisional method of qualifying for nationals, rather than by doing so at the regional meet, and it???s much harder than achieving a regional mark.???
While Van Horn and Clark are on the West Coast, the rest of the squad will be in the Eastern Time Zone, competing in the Pepsi Florida Relays at the University of Florida. The two-day meet features a high level of competition in all events and will provide an opportunity to compete in a variety of relays. The event has traditionally spurred a number of qualifying marks and will be a step up from last weekend???s Hurricane Challenge at the University of Miami.
???The competition will pick up, and there will be a number of talented collegiate athletes and a contingent of post-collegiate athletes who are training for the Olympic Trials and Olympic Games,??? Clark said. ???This provides us with a really good, quality meet and allows us to move forward in getting sharp for the SEC and NCAA meets.???
Tennessee arrives at ???The Swamp??? with six NCAA regional qualifiers in eight different events. The group includes freshman Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) in the 100m and 200m dashes, senior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) in the 400m, junior Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) in the 1500m, junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) in the 100m hurdles, freshman Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) in the discus and senior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the hammer and discus.
Bowman stands atop the NCAA list in the 1500m and was the SEC Female Runner of the Week after winning that event in a personal-best 4:16.89 at the Hurricane Challenge. Alexander was the SEC Freshman Athlete of the Week after taking second in the discus in a career-best 175-8 in Coral Gables. Clark would like to see more of those types of efforts in the weeks ahead.
???I didn???t have any expectations going into the Miami meet,??? Clark said. ???I was using that meet to make the transition from the indoor to outdoor seasons in healthy fashion, and thankfully we were successful. But, I would like my entire team to qualify for the regional meet. With the demographics we have on this team, we should have the quality to advance a lot to the Mideast Regional.
???My goal is, at some point, to qualify people, and the meet last week gave us eight marks that met that standard. It would be nice to continue that in Gainesville and get a national mark from Katie at Stanford.???
