The Tennessee men???s track and field team is 10th with 160.28 points in this week???s US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings released Wednesday.
LSU occupies the top spot with 285.01 points. Florida State is second with 268.80 points, with Texas A&M???s 257.09 points ranking third. Florida and Texas round out the top five with 226.14 and 197.09 points, respectively.
Auburn is the next SEC team, ranking sixth with 189.50 points. The Vols are followed by Arkansas in 12th with 141.57 points, Kentucky in 21st with 100.69, Mississippi State in 24th with 94.06 and Georgia in 25th with 94.03. The SEC???s eight ranked schools are more than any of the other eight conferences with teams ranked this week.
The rankings use an updated scoring system based on athletes??? season-best marks to determine a team???s overall chances of making an impact at the national championship meet. The scoring system for the teams, compiled by Tom Lewis of Missouri, is the sum of its individuals??? place on the descending order list and a weighed value of those performances based on the field. The scoring method is based on the latest NCAA performance list.
Tennessee???s team score consists of two relays and 19 individual performances. Fourteen-time All-America Rubin Williams, the indoor 200 national champion, is ranked sixth in the event with his 20.60 clocking and 11th in the 100 with his time of 10.30. Three-time All-America Jangy Addy is sixth in the decathlon after recording an NCAA???automatic-qualifying score of 7,595, and freshman Michael Ayers is 16th following his NCAA provisional-qualifying score of 7,227. Tennessee has three athletes ranked in the 110 hurdles, with freshman Charlton Rolle???s 13.68 and eighth-place ranking leading the group that also includes Addy and sophomore De???Lon Isom tied for 11th with times of 13.73.
All-America Matthew Maloney is 11th in the javelin with his season-best throw of 228-2. Freshman Joseph Berry moved up to 15th in the pole vault with his Vanderbilt Track and Vanderbilt Invitational record-breaking clearance of 17-1. Junior Nick Panezich???s season-best discus throw of 184-3 ranks 20th and his 56-8 effort in the shot put ranks 52nd. All-America Yarrick Kincaid is 21st in the 800 with his time of 1:49.53. Four-time All-America Evander Wells is 22nd in the 200 in 20.93 and 35th in the 100 with a time of 10.45.
Senior Andrew Dawson ranks 23rd in the 800 with his time of 1:49.59. Sophomore Brad Holtz???s 16-10 3/4 clearance ranks 28th in the pole vault. Three-time All-America Michael Hogue is 34th in the pole vault with his 16-6 3/4 clearance. Junior Richard Wooten is 51st in the hammer with his throw of 198-2, and fellow junior Akeem Hardnett???s triple jump mark of 49-10 1/2 also ranks 51st.
Tennessee???s All-America 4x100 relay team of Matthieu Pritchett, Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Williams is fourth with a time of 39.39, and the 4x400 relay team of Samdi Fraser, Stevenson, Williams and Wells ranks 17th with a time of 3:08.46.
