NASHVILLE -- The 16th-ranked University of Tennessee women???s track & field team won five events on Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational, including a one-two-three finish in the discus throw, and junior Sarah Bowman posted the top 800m time in the NCAA thus far in 2008, as the Lady Vols closed out their stay in cool, damp and windy conditions in Music City.
???All in all, we???re still qualifying people for the regional meet, winning events and improving times,??? UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. ???The weather conditions were not conducive to outstanding performances, but we still had a few marks that stood out.
???It (the weather) is frustrating at times. This is the third meet (out of four) where we have had windy conditions or rain that affects the competition with delays. That???s what happens sometimes during the outdoor season, and it is part of the game.???
For the third meet in a row, Big Orange freshman Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) was the cream of the crop in the discus throw. The talented rookie let loose a toss of 174 feet, five inches to claim victory at the VU Track & Field Complex. She wasn???t the lone Lady Vol atop the standings, as senior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) came in second at 163-4, while fellow senior Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) was right behind in third at 152-6.
Earlier in the day, Dickenson had already secured a triumph of her own in the hammer throw, ripping off a heave of 187-2 to win at this meet for the second year in a row. It was her second win of the season in the hammer, duplicating a first-place result at the Hurricane Challenge. Freshman Taylor Rotella (Knoxville, Tenn.), meanwhile, posted a personal best of 133-6 to finish 19th.
In Tennessee???s lone individual running event victory of the meet, junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) came out on top in the 100m hurdles for the second consecutive meet. Law, who was triumphant in the hurdles last weekend at the Sea Ray Relays, got over the obstacles in 13.66 on Saturday.
The Lady Vols were able to make a clean sweep of the relay crowns in Nashville. First, the quartet of freshman Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.), senior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas), senior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) and sophomore Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) put together a season best and an NCAA regional qualifying readout of 44.52 in the 4x100m event.
UT also emerged victorious in the 4x4, just missing the regional mark by .03 with a season-topping 3:42.03 effort. Carrying the baton for Team Orange were Loche, junior Kimarra McDonald (Lumberton, N.J.), Tarmoh and sophomore Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.).
While Bowman wasn???t the winner in the 800m race, she was the top collegiate finisher and moved to number one on the 2008 NCAA list with a career-best 2:04.48 output. Only two-time Olympian Hazel Clark-Riley was faster on Saturday, winning in 2:01.98. With her elevation to No. 1 in the 800m, Bowman now owns the fastest times at two NCAA distances this season. She ran 4:16.89 in the 1500m earlier at the Hurricane Challenge.
The Big Orange women also posted top-three finishers in two sprint events on the final day at Vandy. Tarmoh and Layne went one-two in the 100m dash with times of 11.72 and 11.74, respectively, while Loche came away with a third-place outing in the 400m in 54.11.
In the only other results involving Lady Vols, Tennessee reported a pair of top-five placers in the pole vault. Junior Alicia Essex (Purcellville, Va.) was the Orange and White???s top competitor, taking third at 12-3 1/2, while sophomore Katie O???Connell (Memphis, Tenn.) wound up fifth at 10-8.
Tennessee will return to action next Thursday, as the Lady Vols travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take part in the 114th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. The meet, which features world class, collegiate, high school and numerous other classifications of athletes, runs through Saturday evening.
