April 12, 2008 | Rowing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? The University of Tennessee women???s rowing team finished second in both the Varsity and Second Varsity Eight races in a quad meet with Michigan, Bucknell and host Ohio State on Saturday. The Buckeyes and Wolverines split the four races, with OSU taking the V8+ and 2V4+ events. The Lady Vols??? top shell is now 3-1 on the season.
???This was definitely a good racing experience for all of us,??? Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. ???Every boat in the program came away with some concrete experience today.???
The No. 9-ranked Orange and White Varsity Eight finished just two-tenths of a second behind Michigan???s first place squad at Griggs Reservoir. In the final race of the day, UT???s V8+, manned by sophomore coxswain Katie Ross, senior Kendra Warren, junior Erin-Monique Shelton, junior Kate Brownlee, freshman Libu??e Bruncv??kova???, and seniors Renee Brittle, Krista Gearing, Mary Jones and Jessica Ayers, could not hold off a late push from the Wolverines who crossed the line in 6:47.9. The Lady Vols did top the Buckeyes, whose Varsity 8+ shell finished second at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Tennessee???s Second Varsity Eight had a good showing as well, taking second behind Ohio State and topping both Michigan and Bucknell. The Big Orange shell, which consisted of sophomore coxswain Sydney Newman, sophomore Mary Beth Dreusike, junior Caroline Howell, sophomore Laura Miller, sophomore Kate Snider, senior Nina Dobratz, senior Genevieve Collins and freshman Melissa Toms, finished in 7:03.2, seven seconds off the Buckeye???s pace.??
In the Second Varsity Four, Tennessee topped Bucknell but fell to both OSU and UM, while in the Varsity Four, the Orange and White struggled, finishing 21 seconds behind Michigan and five seconds off the third-place Bison???s pace.
???We certainly fell short in a couple of areas that we didn???t want to this weekend but we???ve seen clearly those avenues that we need to direct our efforts to get better,??? Glenn said. ???I???m looking forward to the next opportunity that we have.???
The Lady Vols will close out the regular season next weekend, when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take Yale and the host Tigers. The novices will also be in action next week, playing host to the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
