The Tennessee men???s track and field team finished fifth with 26 points as the NCAA Indoor Championships concluded Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
???We had great things happen,??? head coach Bill Webb said. ???Rubin (Williams) had a fantastic weekend. He did not have a good start (in the 60) today, but he ran three great races yesterday. Jangy Addy is a warrior. He was out here for two long days and earned both of his finishes. I???m proud of the guys. Anytime you get a top-five finish at NCAAs you have to be happy, but we also had a point or two left out there. Those things happen at this meet.???
Addy finished fifth in the heptathlon with 5,683 points after recording a personal-best mark in two of the three events contested Saturday. Addy, who shares the world record in the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, began his day by tying the meet record in the event with his time of 7.86 seconds. The senior team captain then went on to clear a personal-best height of 14 feet, 7 1/4 inches in the pole vault before clocking a personal-best time of 2:56.71 in the 1,000. He finished fifth in the 60 hurdles Friday night with a time of 7.84.
Rubin Williams earned his second All-America certificate in as many days by stopping the clock in 6.72 to finish seventh in the 60. The senior, who broke Tennessee???s school record in the 200 and won his first individual national championship in 20.36 Friday night, heads back to Knoxville with 14 career All-America certificates, more than any other track athlete in school history.
Arizona State won the team title with 44 points. Florida State followed in second after scoring 41 points. Texas was third with 34 points, and LSU finished fourth with 33. Tennessee???s 26 points are the most scored by the Vols at the indoor national championship meet since they put 62.5 points on the board to claim the program???s first indoor team title in 2002. UT has placed in the top five three times in the last six years and 16 times overall.
ESPN2 will air a tape-delayed broadcast of the NCAA Indoor Championships on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern time. The Vols open their outdoor season next weekend with a spring break trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
