UT's Tarmoh Earns SEC Rookie Kudos
February 19, 2008 | Women's Track
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- For the fourth time this season a Tennessee Lady Vol has been named Southeastern Conference Track & Field Female Freshman of the Week.?? Jeneba Tarmoh got the nod on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of three-time honoree and teammate Annie Alexander, the league office announced.
Tarmoh, who hails from San Jose, Calif., ran four races over the weekend at the Tyson Invitational, and the UT freshman charted career-best times in three of those against a field that included 18 of the top 25 teams in the nation competing.?? As a result, Tarmoh managed a finish of second in the 200-meter dash and ninth in the 60-meter dash.
In the 200 meters, Tarmoh produced back-to-back personal bests and NCAA provisional readouts of 23.33 in the prelims and 23.27 in the final.?? The latter mark moved her to number two in the SEC and fourth nationally on the NCAA descending order list.?? The time is the 12th fastest in school history and places her fifth on UT???s all-time performers list in that event.
At the shorter distance, Tarmoh ran 7.39 in the prelims and a non-altitude PR and provisional of 7.34 in the final to place ninth.?? That mark puts her seventh in the league this week and 15th in the NCAA.?? She moved to number six on UT???s all-time performers list at that distance.
Tarmoh is the sixth Lady Vol to be honored by the conference this season.?? Alexander was named the SEC Female Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15 and 29 and Feb. 12, while Lynne Layne (Jan. 15) and Sarah Bowman (Feb. 5) were chosen as SEC Female Runners of the Week.
Tennessee, which stands at second in the current United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) Division I Rankings, is idle this week.?? The Lady Vols return to action on Feb. 29-March 2, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to try and win their third SEC Indoor Championship trophy in four seasons.
